Rebuilding journal search again

We're having to rebuild the search server again (previously, previously). It will take a few days to reindex all the content.

Meanwhile search services should be running, but probably returning no results or incomplete results for most queries.

Before you follow: I write lengthy annotations of novels I'm reading that may be intended for 18+, and some of my creative works veer in that direction as well, so PLEASE no minor interactions! 🙏🏻 I also curse a lot, and talk about some heavy subjects that occur in my own life (under cut and with content warnings in the Reason for Age Restriction field, like a civilized netizen), so if that's not your cup of tea, we might have issues connecting.

Friday Five: School

from [community profile] thefridayfive

1. Who was your favorite teacher?
Mrs. Taylor. Ronnie Taylor. She was awesome.

2. Why was that teacher so special?
When my best friend and I entered her class in the 6th grade she had taught our older sisters. Both of us were stressed out about that because both of our sister could be serious problems. But she loved both our sisters and us. Our social group loved her and she knew it. She kind of played favorites and let us stay inside the air conditioned class during recess where we'd talk or play with some kind of sack (it couldn't have been a hackey sack). She was strict but as long as we were good she was fine.

She loved an old show called Rider's in the Sky and I remember her and her love of that western. She also loved the California Raisins. She had a bank or statue of a California Raisin. While we were playing with that sack or ball we broke it. She'd stepped out. We were horrified and we didn't hide it. I remember Diane who actually through the sack being so upset Mrs. Taylor would hate her. She wasn't even mad. She did tell us we shouldn't have been throwing the thing in the classroom but I remember her hugging us and telling us we were already forgiven. We did try to glue it together for her.

She used to invite her students over (in groups with parents permission). I never got to go over but many did. I don't think my mom was against it. There was just never any time. When I was an adult and was visiting the area my best friend and I stopped by her house. She was outside in her yard. She immediately recognized us and though she was tiny she hugged us fiercely. We talked with her for a while.

Debbie (my BFF) texted me last year, I think, because she found that Mrs. Taylor had died. We were so heartbroken. It felt worse to me that she was only a couple hours away in Reno. I could have gone to see her but I was a year too late.

Still she was a teach that made all her kids love her and she was never far from your thoughts.

3. Do you think teachers get paid enough?
I don't know what teachers get paid all over the country but in California they make enough. They don't work the whole year and still make much more than I do. If I made that I'd have so much more financial freedom.

4. Do you have a favorite year of school?
Despite loving me 6th grade teacher. My favorite year was my freshman year of highschool. Most people act like that was the worst year for them but I loved it. I loved the rallies. I loved most of my classmates. I loved the friends I had and I enjoyed going to school. I gained a good group of friends in junior high and while a lot of them didn't go to the same highschool as I did... I was able to "collect" some great friends. We had a blast together and made great memories. Unfortunately, I didn't get to have the other 3 years with these friends because we moved. And I continued my highschool in a tiny school. I hated it.

5. If you could travel back in time and tell yourself something now that would have helped you get through school, what would you say?
Fight harder to go to the regular highschool. Don't give up on college just because it is boring as hell. And maybe be less afraid of what people think of you. Be you and if they don't like it then it is there loss.

How to Sign-Up

See the schedule for when sign-ups open.

In order to participate in this exchange, you will need to specify your
Requests — what you would like in the work created for you — and your Offers — what you are willing to write for the user you are assigned.

Both require you to choose at least 5 and no more than 20 tags. You may only choose the tags in the tagset.

Tagsets and how they work

Tagsets are a way to help us match you with the person you will be writing for and the person who will be writing for you.  AO3's matching mechanism is run off of matching tags, not based on free-text prompts.

You must choose the tags exactly as they appear in the tagset. AO3 may default to the correct tag, but it is best practice to copy and paste the tag directly from the tagset. Be careful to avoid extra spaces. If the tags do not match, the matching won't go through. Once AO3's matching mechanism has made suggestions based on matching tags, the mods will then double-check the matches to make sure that things align with people's requests and Do Not Wants before finalizing the matches.

Requests & Offers

(Prompts, Preferences, Triggers, Do Not Wants)

This is the space where you can detail what you would like to receive.  In your request section, please write out 3-5 prompts.  We know that sometimes people like to make their request a list of tropes and topics they like rather than writing specific prompts, but it is helpful for participants to have a more detailed sense of what you might want so please do this in addition to your prompts, rather than in lieu of them.  You are more than welcome to have one of your prompts be "anything from the chosen tags/anything that strikes your fancy" if you want to provide a hands-off prompt for your writer.  You should not indicate any prompts in the offer section, but rather topics or tropes you would be interested in writing for the exchange.

In both the request and offer sections, please list out what you would not want to see in your fic/what you would not want to write.  We want you to receive a prompt you’ll be happy writing and a story you’ll be happy reading. Please delineate between your preferences and/or would make you unhappy (Ex: I only want fics set in canon; I'd prefer Kathy Stabler kept off screen, etc.) versus something that would squick or trigger you (Ex: explicit sexual assault; pregnancy and/or miscarriage, etc.).  Having more details helps us avoid matching you with someone who is explicitly requesting something that would make you unhappy or upset.

You may include a link to a Dear Writer letter or a personal exchange guidelines post. These may be hosted on Dreamwidth, Tumblr, a Google Doc, etc. You may provide more details in these optional links; however, please include any explicit 'Do Not Wants' directly in your AO3 request.

Please remember you can edit your Requests and Offers until we close sign-ups.  If you have a fresh idea you want to add, or decide you don’t actually want to write something you had offered, you can adjust it between the time you initially sign up and when we close sign-ups for matching.  The mods cannot edit your signup for you to add a letter link in or any other details you may have forgotten. It is also important to make sure you are offering tags that have been requested or we will not be able to match you. We will remind you on the last day of sign-ups.

If you have any questions about the process, you may reach out to geneticgifts@gmail.com or comment below.

So what cool fancrafts/podfics/fics/fanart/fanvids/other kinds of fanworks have we discovered this week? Drop it in the comments below. Anon comment is enabled.

BTW, AI fanworks are not eligible for reccing at recthething. If you aware that a fanwork is AI-generated, please do not rec it here.

Nominations Open!

Nominations are now open for Partners 4 Life Exchange!

What do I do?

1) First, go look at the tagset. Think about what tropes or prompts you'd like to request or write for EO. Are any of them missing from the tagset?

2) If so, click on the Nominate button in the upper right. It will bring you to a page with 20 fields you can type into.

3) Type each trope/prompt you would like into a field. Try to imitate the formatting of the other tags in the tagset, including capitalization. For instance, you'll notice that Soulmate AU-specific tropes/prompts begin with "Soulmate AU - ", and SVU-specific AUs relating to specific episodes or arcs begin with "SVU: ".

4) When you finish typing a trope/prompt, type a comma to finalize that field.

5) When you have added all the tropes/prompts you want (or have filled up your nominations), click on the Submit button at the bottom of the page.

You will be able to edit your nominated tropes/prompts until they are approved, and you will be able to add new nominations as long as there are blank fields in your nomination form. Nominations will remain open until Wednesday, June 25.

Go forth and nominate! :)

A few recs from Diagetic Exchange

[community profile] diegetic_exchange is for in-universe fanfic/RPF/etc. Here are some things I enjoyed from it!

Babylon 5

Stars Uncrossed: My Vorlon Sex Story! (1300 words, explicit)
OF COURSE there is Vorlon/human reader insert smut on Future Space AO3, and of course there are some very recognizable Space AO3 usernames in the comments. The author's notes are also pure gold. MINBARI DNI.

Megamind

Am I the Asshole for impersonating someone else to be with my girlfriend? (700 words, Megamind/Roxanne)
The most in-character thing ever. The comments are great, and also extremely in character.

Murderbot Diaries

Bot Sacrifice (600 wds, gen)
Sanctuary Moon fanfic with ART's inline beta comments. Hilarious and very them, and also very touching.
