doranwen: reading one book is like eating one potato chip (Reading One Book)
This might be useful for anyone who just wants a good fic in a certain category, no matter the fandom. Everything is cut so if you don't want to see a particular category, just be sure to view this from the page for this date, and expand only the categories you want. I'll add more fics to this as I find them or think of them. This list is by no means all-inclusive; absence of a fic on it only means that fic has not come to my mind yet as an outstanding example of a particular category, though it may be well-written.

Please let me know if you run across any dead links to stories (that aren't specified - at least one of the stories in this post was deleted after I rec'd it, and I've left the rec up with a note to that effect).

[sticky entry] Sticky: WIP Master Post

doranwen: female nerds, rare and precious (Default)
All of the WIPs below are looking for alpha/beta readers to help with characterization, bounce ideas off, and/or other things. Comment if you're interested. (Just someone to chat to, to show the latest bits to, etc. will help, so if you want to see any of these written, maybe you want to offer to be that person?)

Each WIP is listed in alphabetical fandom order along with the current wordcount, and an excerpt of some of my favorite lines from it.

1-800-Missing: post-1x13 (7.3k) )

Alphas: continuing series (1.2k) )

Flood (2007): AU ending (13.3k) )

Push: continuing series (2.3k) )

Rizzoli & Isles: early seasons casefic (3.4k) )

Rookie Blue: AU beginnings (11.6k) )

Rookie Blue: AU to 1x08 (1.4k) )

Rookie Blue: AU to 2x03 (3.6k) )

Rookie Blue: AU after 4x01 (7.6k) )

Smallville: AU to 3x01 (10k) )

Smallville: time travel/shared bodies AU (300) )

Sue Thomas F.B.Eye: AU ending to pilot (1.9k) )

X-Men: post-X2 (16.2k) )

Comment if you want to help - or if you just want to see more of a particular WIP! I won't be posting them on AO3 until they're finished (if that ever happens), so the only other possibility is posting some of them to friends-locked posts here, which I'm willing to do if there's interest.

Black Sash

doranwen: the character Sam from Rookie Blue holding the face of character Andy (Rookie Blue)
Poking through her IMDB list, I discovered that Missy Peregrym was in a super-short-lived WB show (about a former cop - who'd been framed for a crime he didn't commit and did hard time in Hong Kong prison - who runs a martial arts school - and she's one of his students) before she ever starred in Stick It - and the show's actually good! I've only watched the pilot so far but I know I'm going to get sucked in and want fic for it - and there really isn't any. It's called Black Sash. Too bad they canceled it before it even got a full season…

I guess I know what one of my Yuletide fandoms is going to be next year, along with Cybergeddon and FBI. :)
doranwen: the character Sam from Rookie Blue holding the face of character Andy (Rookie Blue)
So I was watching the latest ep of FBI this past week (which by the way was AWESOME - I loved the scene at the hospital with OA and Maggie!), and suddenly heard the character of Jubal saying this:

"We are troubled on every side, yet not distressed; we are perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; cast down, but not destroyed…"

I blinked in recognition. And then grinned with delight. I'm not sure how many of the rest of the viewers of the episode actually recognized it, but that's a couple verses from the Bible that I know very well, 2 Corinthians 4:8-9. I grew up with this recording of a folk trio singing it (very lovely guitar). It's more beautiful if you've got the CD release - the recording on Youtube sounds like someone's cassette tape transfer (if anyone wants a good quality mp3 of the track, let me know).

Anyway, I think that added an interesting element to the character of Jubal - how does he know that verse? (It's not like John 3:16, where most people can quote a little bit or say the reference - people usually don't know it unless they've had some real Bible/church involvement at some point.) The show is living up to what they said about it - that we'd get the characters' stories in little bits at a time. I just want to know more now. :D

(Used my Rookie Blue icon for this post because it's still Missy in it, lol. I'm too multifandom to have an icon for every fandom I'm into, alas.)

Hurt/comfort is one of my favorite things, so when I heard of this exchange, I couldn't resist trying it out. :D Below I've done a lot of describing the awesomeness about each pairing or group, and gave a few prompts in case you find them useful. I hope you have a lot of fun writing for me. :)

What I love about relationships is all the emotional depth: vulnerability, loyalty, knowing someone so well you know what they feel/think/need, even just having someone there as an emotional "rock". The whole "not being alone" feeling is such a powerful theme.

I once made up a 101 favorite tropes list (in no particular order), so feel free to make use of those if any of them get your muse going: https://doranwen.dreamwidth.org/240453.html

Besides those tropes, here are my general likes:
deep platonic friendship, romantic friendship, asexual romance, found families, apocalyptic fic, hurt/comfort (obviously!), nonsexual physical touch (including cuddling), self-sacrifice, characters being vulnerable, character redemption, survival fic, positive treatment of religion, characters dealing with trauma, trust building, missing scenes, canon divergence AU (especially fix-it fic)

DNWs: supernatural/fantasy beings (elves, vampires, werewolves, gnomes, zombies, etc.), AUs other than canon divergence or alt beginnings, deathfic or horror, calling an adult "baby" or "darling", mpreg, crackfic, gore (mild violence is OK, just not as graphic as a surgery documentary), uncensored profanity, first/second person fic

I have requested "bullet removal" and/or "Cleaning/treating wounds" on some fandoms; the description you'd need to do for those will not squick me, so don't worry about it running afoul of my DNW for gore. It has to be very graphic to bother me.

DNW/Caution note: I'm not averse to mentions of sex, but I'd prefer the fic not focus on it or indulge in the physical feelings, because it can pull me out of the story so quickly. Emotional feelings/bonds are what I focus on in any ship. If a prompt requires a mention or implies sex in some way, feel free to include it as necessary as long as the focus of the fic is elsewhere. For instance, I've requested several tags that include rape; with these, as long as you aren't glorying in the nonconsensual aspect of things and focus on the emotional recovery or comfort afterwards, it's fine for me.

Don't worry if someone's written a similar idea before. My first real fandom was one where people used to write a dozen versions of the same TV ep, and I loved reading them all. There are never too many versions of the same story, in my opinion.

Some of the fandoms below have more freeforms than others; this has nothing to do with how much or how little I love the pairings/groups, but more with how versatile the pairing was for different tropes and situations. I'm sure I'll love reading whatever you write for any of these fandoms! :)

Below are optional prompts - or just plain squeeing and unhelpful "I'd love this!" - in the order that I found the tags in the tagset:

Alphas (TV) )

FBI (TV 2018) )

Rookie Blue )

Sue Thomas: F.B.Eye )

Can't wait to see what you write for me! I hope you have a blast doing so. :D
doranwen: the character Sam from Rookie Blue holding the face of character Andy (Rookie Blue)
Well, I didn't write a ton - somewhere around 3k total - but I did double the length of one of my Rookie Blue WIPs. It's the AU for after 4x01, where I play with Andy's reactions to the trauma of having a gun held to her head, and the fallout it has on her relationships and mental health. (Because the show SO glossed over that and it was absolutely ridiculous. I mean, c'mon, a single scene talking about it - while they're still running for their lives - and she's all good? Who are we kidding?)

If you want to see more, comment on this post (logged into Dreamwidth), and I'll post what I have under a special filter and grant you access to it. (Or if you want to volunteer to alpha read as I write it, you don't need a Dreamwidth account - just give me whatever email address you associate with Gmail and I'll send you an invitation to view the Google Doc of it.)

Wayback Exchange reminds me a lot of My Old Fandom, an exchange I had a lot of fun with some years ago, so I couldn't resist trying it out this year. I'm excited you're writing a story for me, and I promise I will comment with much appreciation! I did a lot of describing the awesomeness about each fandom and/or character/ship, and gave a few prompts in case you find them useful. I hope you have a lot of fun writing for me. :)

Prompts are, of course, completely optional - use them or ignore them as suits you best. I also once made up a 101 favorite tropes list (in no particular order), so feel free to make use of those if any of them get your muse going: https://doranwen.dreamwidth.org/240453.html

Besides those tropes, here are my general likes:

DNWs: supernatural/fantasy beings (elves outside of LOTR, vampires, werewolves, gnomes, zombies, etc.), AUs other than canon divergence or alt beginnings, noncanonical deathfic or horror, calling an adult "baby" or "darling", mpreg, crackfic, gore (mild violence is OK, just not as graphic as a surgery documentary), uncensored profanity, first/second person fic

Happy writing! :D
doranwen: picture of a book with the word logophile (logophile)
If the NSA is going through our search histories, I really hope they take into account those of us researching for stories, because our histories can get pretty… interesting. (Sometimes worrisome, sometimes just plain odd.)

Examples:

A few years ago I was writing a Push fic, and a friend of mine was helping with the research. She had to look up information about hydrochloric acid, how much it has to be diluted to be safe, how one handles it, etc. I remember her specifically commenting about her search history being reeeeeally interesting with that added to it.

I've looked up the exact price of a few grocery store items in a specific city in a specific year, AND the sales tax rate for that location, just to have my character get the correct change from the bill I thought of them handing the clerk. (OK, that might just be me being obsessive about accuracy and a bit of mathematician/math teacher thrown in.)

For my Yuletide assignment (the 17k post-apocalyptic Boxcar Children fic) I ended up researching the process and tools used to make goat butter and goat cheese.

And most recently, I either had or have tabs open about the Holmes and Rahe Stress Scale, stress-related illnesses, acute stress disorder, PTSD, depression, the shift schedules of Toronto police… (Any guesses which fandom I'm doing that research for? lol)

My latest challenge is figuring out how to develop a B-plot with this character's acute stress disorder (very possibly developing it into full-blown PTSD, if she can hide it from others well enough), and develop an A-plot or at least multiple mini-A-plots to have something to show the B-plot through, that'll work with the B-plot. And somehow get to the end result that I want, character- and relationship-wise. I'm not sure this is something I'm actually capable of doing…
doranwen: the character Sam from Rookie Blue holding the face of character Andy (Rookie Blue)
It occurred to me once that if I had brainstorming/alpha readers for a variety of fandoms, I'd probably be churning out fic like crazy, given the number of ideas I have for fics. (In some ways, it's a good thing I don't - I have a lot of other stuff to accomplish!)

The trouble is finding someone that a) wants to see more of my writing in a fandom that I can write and have ideas in, and b), can talk to me live (IRC, IM, etc.). Bonus if they can actually be into the fandom I'm into at a given moment. My first initial interest in a fandom can get me writing a LOT due to the level I can obsess - and if I had fellow fans to click with on it, I'd stay in that obsession longer. Hence why I have a series for Alphas with 24.9k words in it altogether (and a WIP on my hard drive with another 1.2k), as well as a 25k story and a couple that are much smaller!

My need for alpha readers seems to be mainly the need to process the story verbally to someone, with some feedback as to whether my conception is plausible (I don't trust my own judgment when it comes to social things - I know full well my limitations there!). Characterization, walking through various situations, etc. I don't know where one goes to find that for fandoms that are small or dead. I've gotten nowhere with Rookie Blue (which is the one I really want to write right now). So I keep adding little bits to whichever WIP lets me keep going (currently the 4x01 AU is the only one, but the 2x03 AU is possible - the AU beginnings is truly stuck, however, unless I find someone to help). Tonight it was ~400 words added to the 4x01 AU. Very slow progress…

doranwen: the last five lines of an Archibald Lampman poem called Snow (The world seems shrouded)
…are amazing. Seriously. So even though hardly anyone is going to see this (and I don't have enough recs here to make a real recs post), I have to post why they are awesome.

First, there is the FBI gift:

only wind and emptiness
1,830 words of waffiness setting up Maggie's relationship with her husband till you can't help but feel the love between them, and then the phone call comes in with a WHAM and smashes her life to pieces, leaving you aching for her. Beautifully done!

And then there's the Cybergeddon treat I got in Madness:

I Saved the World and All I Got Was This Lousy T-Shirt
1,263 words of post-saving the world fic that feels SO spot on for characterization. There's Rabbit banter and the complicated relationship with her mom and references to Gustov still being out there… I also love that in this fic Chloe sticks to her guns with her decisions and doesn't take Frank back because he insisted she put him ahead of her career. (I often want the reverse with a ship - but this one doesn't feel like it deserves that kind of choosing-each-other-first - they just aren't that solid or that committed for it.) This is such a fantastic fic! (and the title is hilariously perfect)
doranwen: female nerds, rare and precious (Default)
For anyone who wasn't aware, my obsession with Rookie Blue led to me creating [community profile] rookieblue. So far I haven't gotten anyone else to post or even comment, but I remain hopeful. The fandom cannot be *entirely* dead! So if you know anyone who is into Rookie Blue, please send them that way. :)
doranwen: female nerds, rare and precious (Default)
I got kind of obsessed with Rookie Blue this summer. (Some of my online friends might well ask "Kind of?" with great skepticism, and rightfully so.) The result was that I created a spreadsheet of all the fics I downloaded and saved from AO3, Fanfiction.net, and anywhere else (LJ comms, you name it). As I did so, I made notes of my favorite fanfics, and decided to create a recs post with all 181 of them.

Disclaimer: This is NOT a master list of all the well-written fics out there. Inclusion on this list does require a minimum level of writing quality (though a few on this list push that a bit), but more importantly to me, there has to be a certain something that grabs me, whether it be the wording, the intensity of the emotion, a plot element, something. Whatever it is, it makes me want to re-read the fic, so I figured it might prove interesting to someone else.

The fics below are organized into different groups, starting with episode-focused stories.

For each group, I've selected one fic as the "if you only read one fic for this group, read this one" choice, to be marked with this icon:
Fics chosen for this are as well-written as I could find, and exemplify the group/category as best as possible. Preference on this choice was also given to complete stories, unless a WIP was exceptionally good beyond the rest.

WIPs are marked with this icon, so you can avoid if you don't like reading unfinished stories:
(Icons come from the Icon pack by Icons8.)

So without further ado, I present the recs (along with my thoughts on why I love the fics):

Or Rookie Blue manifesto? I'm not sure what you call this, except I feel like I might explode with all the thoughts I've had with nowhere to share. Just because the fandom died before I could get to it doesn't mean I don't have Feelings and Thoughts about everything, so. Starting with that, actually.

Why the fandom died )

But I have ships, I dooooo, so here to my thoughts on those:

Luke/Andy )

I think that's all I can come up with for Rookie Blue, ship-wise (for now - I'm sure there are more possible ships to discuss!). There are a lot of plot-related things I think were pretty dumb or ill-thought-out (the length of time between Luke being shot and when Sam and Andy find him, Andy going on a UC operation the same day she held a bomb, Duncan even making it through the academy in the first place), but that's what AU fics are for…

If you found this interesting in any way, or agree/disagree with me about something, please comment! I'd love to have a discussion with another Rookie Blue fan.

Thank you for writing for me - I can't wait to see what you come up with! :D
doranwen: female nerds, rare and precious (Default)
Looking for an alpha/beta reader for this - someone who can chat with me, read what I have written and give me fdk on if it's in character or not, someone I can bounce ideas off and finish plotting things with, etc. I've got a lot of energy in writing this and think I would definitely get to finishing it - possibly the longest thing I've ever written. But a lot depends on me having someone to talk to when I hit a snag. (My hard drive's full of WIPs I got stalled on and had no one to talk to to get past them.) I don't post WIPs anywhere else until they are completed, so this is all that will be publicly visible of this one until it's actually done.

So here's a first chapter/sampler of what I have so far, unedited (at this point, it's over 5k and growing, and I have a rough outline almost all the way to the happy ending):

Story premise:

In the show, Andy has a strong relationship with her father, despite his addiction to alcohol. This acts as a mitigating factor to the abandonment she feels from her mother's actions, leaving her "messed up" (see her words to Noah in 1x05 Broad Daylight) but relatively "normal". Tweak a few variables, though, and everything might change significantly. In this case, our story starts years before she ever arrives at 15 Division…

EDIT: Fic is up to 11k now and stalled for lack of beta help… :(
doranwen: reading one book is like eating one potato chip (Reading One Book)
AUex is here!!!!!! I wanted AUex before it ever existed, and am so delighted that it has returned this year. I adore canon divergence so much, you have no idea. (But you will by the time you get to the end of this letter!) I did a lot of describing the awesomeness about each character and AU idea, and hope you're truly inspired by them. I hope you have a lot of fun writing for me. :)

I love characters who are strong, characters who have quiet depth, characters with an active inner life, characters who think and feel… You'll probably see this in the characters I requested. :)

I once made up a 101 favorite tropes list (in no particular order), so feel free to make use of those if any of them get your muse going and work with a requested AU: https://doranwen.dreamwidth.org/240453.html

Besides those tropes, here are my general likes:
deep platonic friendship, romantic friendship, asexual romance, found families, apocalyptic fic, hurt/comfort, nonsexual physical touch (including cuddling), self-sacrifice, characters being vulnerable, character redemption, survival fic, positive treatment of religion, characters dealing with trauma, trust building, missing scenes, canon divergence AU (especially fix-it fic)

DNWs: sex or sexual feelings, supernatural/fantasy beings (elves, vampires, werewolves, gnomes, zombies, etc.), aliens other than Superman, unrequested deathfic, horror, calling an adult "baby" or "darling", mpreg, crackfic, gore (mild violence is OK, just not as graphic as a surgery documentary), uncensored profanity, first/second person fic

Don't worry if someone's written that particular idea before. My first real fandom was one where people used to write a dozen versions of the same TV ep, and I loved reading them all. There are never too many versions of the same story, in my opinion. Too few of these AUs have been written, and I want to see more of even the ones that have!

I don't go into a lot of my thoughts on each of these fandoms and characters, but I've requested all of them in other exchanges unless I stated otherwise below, so if you want more info on the way I look at them, just filter my posts by the "fanfic exchange letter" tag to see other letters that have the same fandoms.

I haven't requested any crossover ships (they didn't even occur to me to nominate!) or tags, but with the exception of Gold Diggers, you are totally welcome to cross any of my requested fandoms with any of the others, or with the following:

1-800-Missing (S1 only, not the S2-S3 of Missing)
C-16: FBI
Push (2009)
Sue Thomas F.B.Eye
Worldweavers - Alma Alexander

And now to the requests (in the order of which I found them in the tagset):

Gold Diggers (1995) )

X-Men (Movieverse) )

X-Men (Movieverse) )

Alphas (TV) )

The Pretender (TV) )

Rizzoli & Isles )

Smallville )

Women's Murder Club (TV) )

Happy writing! :D

I did Every Woman last year and I really loved the whole concept. Women are nearly always my favorite characters in any fandom, so I'm really looking forward to this. Below I've done a lot of describing the awesomeness about each each woman or group, and gave a few prompts in case you find them useful. I hope you have a lot of fun writing for me. :)

I love women who are strong, women who have quiet depth, women with an active inner life, women who think and/or feel… You'll probably see this in the characters I requested. :) I love women in roles from caretaker to defender, including a mix of those (such as a woman defending her children from harm, or a soldier who lays down her war life to raise a family). Courage looks like different things in different people, and I love seeing that strength shown in women with different personalities.

What I love about relationships is all the emotional depth: vulnerability, loyalty, knowing someone so well you know what they feel/think/need, even just having someone there as an emotional "rock". The whole "not being alone" feeling is such a powerful theme.

DNWs: sex or sexual feelings, supernatural/fantasy beings (elves, vampires, werewolves, gnomes, zombies, etc.), AUs other than canon divergence or alt beginnings, deathfic or horror, calling an adult "baby" or "darling", mpreg, crackfic, gore (mild violence is OK, just not as graphic as a surgery documentary), uncensored profanity, first/second person fic

Don't worry if someone's written a similar idea before (even as a gift for me!). My first real fandom was one where people used to write a dozen versions of the same TV ep, and I loved reading them all. There are never too many versions of the same story, in my opinion. I love to see how two people can take the same idea and come up with two totally different stories. :D

If you're crossover-inclined, you're welcome to cross these with any fandom I know: If I've requested it or listed it as a possible crossover fandom in one of my other exchange letters, you can totally use it! Most of the fandoms I've requested in past exchanges have had a lot of women characters (some of them very female-centric), so that should make it easy.

And now to the requests (in the order of which I found them in the tagset):

Earth Girl Trilogy - Janet Edwards )

Crossover Groups )

Alphas (TV) )

Women's Murder Club (TV) )

Happy writing! :D

I had so much of a blast with Chocolate Box last year that I had to do it again. :D Below I've done a lot of describing the awesomeness about each pairing, and gave a few prompts in case you find them useful. I hope you have a lot of fun writing for me. :)

This is my eighth Yuletide, and I've had so much fun each year. I'm excited you're writing a story for me, and I promise I will comment with much appreciation! I did a lot of describing the awesomeness about each fandom and/or character, and gave a few prompts in case you find them useful. I hope you have a lot of fun writing for me. :)

I love characters who are strong as well as characters who are vulnerable, I love characters who have quiet depth, characters with an active inner life, characters who think and feel… You'll probably see this in the characters I requested. :)

If you're crossover-inclined, here's a list of fandoms you could cross with the requested ones (besides, of course, any of my other requests):

1-800-Missing (TV) - love Jess, Brooke, and Sunny so much
C-16: FBI - Amanda and Annie are both fantastic, and Amanda's relationship with Jack is interesting
Flood (2007) - love Sam and Rob, and Patricia and Leonard, and I might be slightly shippy with those two pairs…
Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman - this is in the tagset, even—Lois and Clark are my favs, though I also enjoy S1 Jimmy (I always picture him in stories I read, rather than the actor from S2+)
Lord of the Rings - books only, please
The Pretender - this is also in the tagset—Jarod and Miss Parker are my favs
Push (2009) - this is also in the tagset—am such a Nick/Cassie fan
Rizzoli & Isles (TV) - Jane and Maura are fantastic
Smallville - S1-S3 only, am a Clark/Chloe fan and not into Erica Durance's Lois, nor any of the magic stuff that came in S4
Stick It (2006) - I love Haley, lol
Sue Thomas F.B.Eye - Myles and Tara are my favs, but I love Sue and Jack too
Tomorrow, When the War Began (2010) - I'm not sure exactly how you'd cross something like that with any of my requests, but I love the whole idea of it, even
Women's Murder Club (TV) - this is also in the tagset—Lindsay and Cindy are my favs but I also like Claire a lot
X-Men movieverse - original two films only, please

You can find specific crossover-only prompts here if that interests you.

Don't worry if someone's written a similar idea before. My first real fandom was one where people used to write a dozen versions of the same TV ep, and I loved reading them all. There are never too many versions of the same story, in my opinion.

And now to the requests (in the order they appear in the tagset):

Worldweavers - Alma Alexander )

Gold Diggers (1995) )

Alphas (TV) )

Happy writing! :D
