In response to a user on Reddit who wanted recs for well-written fics, here are all the fics in my database which I've tagged as exceptionally well-written. Most are also tagged as favorites (i.e. I love re-reading them) and a few are not, but their lower level of re-read appeal to me has no bearing on how well-written they are, and what doesn't grab me emotionally may be the perfect fic for you. In each case I thought the author did an amazing job with words and turns of phrase, and that these fics should be seen by more people.

I've been swamped with the Yahoo Groups project the last couple of years so I hadn't signed up for a while, but I'm excited to be able to participate again. I've loved doing Yuletide, and I hope you have a wonderful time writing for me.

I've tried to help you out by describing what I love about each fandom and/or character, and I've written a few prompts in case you find them useful, but if you come up with something of your own, please write what you think will work best! I've been wonderfully surprised by fics that I never would have thought of in a million years but which were absolutely amazing.

I once made up a 101 favorite tropes list (in no particular order), so feel free to make use of those if any of them get your muse going: https://doranwen.dreamwidth.org/240453.html

DNWs )

Opt-ins I'm OK with )

If writing a romantic friendship, I'd prefer the line be drawn at forehead/cheek kisses and cuddles; please reserve lip kisses for sexual relationships.

If a prompt requires something that's listed as a DNW, please follow the prompt rather than the DNW, such as prompts for soulmates, etc. :)

Also, if choosing between writing the characters as true to themselves as you can, vs. writing a particular trope or prompt, I'd prefer you to keep the characters true to themselves.

Possible crossover fandoms )

Please don't worry if someone's written a similar idea before. My first real fandom was one where people used to write a dozen versions of the same TV ep, and I loved reading them all. There are never too many versions of the same story, in my opinion (I'm a firm believer in the "two cakes" mindset). Everyone comes at it differently and I'll enjoy it no matter what!

And now to the requests (in the order they appear in the tagset):

If you're looking at this interested in writing me something, please know that I will be most appreciative for any size treat you are able to write. I didn't feel that I could commit to signing up this year, and while I was happy to take a pinch hit, I knew that would not guarantee me any gift.

updated 2021-12-25

This post is my complete list of crossovers (as far as I've added them in my database). I will endeavor to keep it updated as new crossover fics are added to the database.

I have included one of my own fics in this post, and tagged it as a favorite, because I like to re-read it. (I only do this for some of my fics.) It is not marked as exceptionally well-written because I couldn't evaluate my own work with clarity that way, even if I particularly like the way I wrote something. It's also tagged as a WIP because I never did get to finishing it. *sheepish grin*

Don't worry if someone's written that particular idea before. My first real fandom was one where people used to write a dozen versions of the same TV ep, and I loved reading them all. There are never too many versions of the same story, in my opinion. Too few of these AUs have been written, and I want to see more of even the ones that have!

I don't go into a lot of my thoughts on most of these fandoms and characters (and please do not read anything into which sections are longer or not, I honestly love ALL of these), but I've requested all of them in other exchanges unless otherwise stated below, so if you want more info on the way I look at them, just filter my posts by the "fanfic exchange letter" tag to see other letters that have the same fandoms.

I've requested Crossover AU for a few fandoms (as well as the tag Worldweavers fusion). For any crossover AU, you are totally welcome to cross any of my requested fandoms with any of the others, or with the following:

1-800-Missing (S1 only, not the S2-S3 of Missing) - I prefer non-shippy here
C-16: FBI - I *maybe* ship Amanda/Jack
Cybergeddon (web series) - I don't ship Chloe/Frank, ambivalent about Chloe/Rabbit
Leverage (but please stick with the original show and pretend the new series hasn't happened) - I ship Nate/Sophie and Eliot/Parker, do *not* ship the OT3 or Hardison/Parker, but all gen for the younger three is perfectly fine
Push (2009) - I ship Nick/Cassie
Sue Thomas F.B.Eye - I ship Jack/Sue and Myles/Tara
Worldweavers - Alma Alexander - I prefer non-shippy here

As far as soulmates-specific things go: I don't care one way or the other about soulmarks, but prefer they not be the person's name or anything they say. I definitely do not want timers or a red string of fate. I'm OK in general with sharing scars, emotions, etc.

AUex is here!!!!!! I wanted AUex before it ever existed, and am so delighted that it has returned once again. I adore canon divergence so much, and there are so many other interesting AUs that have intrigued me, as you will see. I did a lot of describing the awesomeness about each character and AU idea, and hope you're truly inspired by them. I hope you have a lot of fun writing for me. :)

I once made up a 101 favorite tropes list (in no particular order), so feel free to make use of those if any of them get your muse going and work with a requested AU: https://doranwen.dreamwidth.org/240453.html

Besides those tropes, here are my general likes:
deep platonic friendship, romantic friendship, asexual romance, found families, apocalyptic fic, hurt/comfort, nonsexual physical touch (including cuddling), self-sacrifice, characters being vulnerable, character redemption, survival fic, positive treatment of religion, characters dealing with trauma, trust building, missing scenes, canon divergence AU (especially fix-it fic)

DNWs: supernatural/fantasy beings (elves, vampires, werewolves, gnomes, zombies, etc.), aliens other than Superman, unrequested deathfic, horror, calling an adult "baby" or "darling", mpreg, crackfic, gore (mild violence is OK, just not as graphic as a surgery documentary), uncensored profanity, first/second person fic

DNW/Caution note: I'm not averse to mentions of sex, but I'd prefer the fic not focus on it or indulge in the physical feelings. Emotional feelings/bonds are what I focus on in any ship. If a prompt requires a mention or implies sex in some way, feel free to include it as necessary as long as the focus of the fic is elsewhere.

I've done Every Woman for several years and I really love the whole concept. Women are nearly always my favorite characters in any fandom, so I'm really looking forward to this. Below I've done a lot of describing the awesomeness about each each woman or group, and gave a few prompts in case you find them useful. I hope you have a lot of fun writing for me. :)

I love women who are strong, women who have quiet depth, women with an active inner life, women who do a lot of thinking and/or feeling… You'll probably see this in the characters I requested. :) I love women in roles from caretaker to defender, including a mix of those (such as a woman defending her children from harm, or a soldier who lays down her war life to raise a family). Courage looks like different things in different people, and I love seeing that strength shown in women with different personalities.

What I love about relationships is all the emotional depth: vulnerability, loyalty, knowing someone so well you know what they feel/think/need, even just having someone there as an emotional "rock". The whole "not being alone" feeling is such a powerful theme.

I once made up a 101 favorite tropes list (in no particular order), so feel free to make use of those if any of them get your muse going: https://doranwen.dreamwidth.org/240453.html

DNWs: supernatural/fantasy beings (elves outside of LOTR, vampires, werewolves, gnomes, zombies, etc.), AUs other than canon divergence or alt beginnings, noncanonical deathfic or horror, calling an adult "baby" or "darling", mpreg, crackfic, gore (mild violence is OK, just not as graphic as a surgery documentary), uncensored profanity, first/second person fic

DNW/Caution note: I'm not averse to mentions of sex, but I'd prefer the fic not focus on it or indulge in the physical feelings. Emotional feelings/bonds are what I focus on in any ship. My first real fandom was one where people used to write a dozen versions of the same TV ep, and I loved reading them all. There are never too many versions of the same story, in my opinion. I love to see how two people can take the same idea and come up with two totally different stories. :D

If you're crossover-inclined, you're welcome to cross these with any fandom I know: If I've requested it or listed it as a possible crossover fandom in one of my other exchange letters, you can totally use it! Most of the fandoms I've requested in past exchanges have had a lot of women characters (some of them very female-centric), so that should make it easy.

deep platonic friendship, romantic friendship, asexual romance, found families, apocalyptic fic, hurt/comfort, nonsexual physical touch (including cuddling), self-sacrifice, characters being vulnerable, character redemption, survival fic, positive treatment of religion, characters dealing with trauma, trust building, missing scenes, canon divergence AU (especially fix-it fic)

DNW/Caution note: I'm not averse to mentions of sex, but I'd prefer the fic not focus on it or indulge in the physical feelings, because it can pull me out of the story so quickly. Emotional feelings/bonds are what I focus on in any ship. If a prompt requires a mention or implies sex in some way, feel free to include it as necessary as long as the focus of the fic is elsewhere.

Don't worry if someone's written that particular idea before. My first real fandom was one where people used to write a dozen versions of the same TV ep, and I loved reading them all. There are never too many versions of the same story, in my opinion. Too few of these AUs have been written, and I want to see more of even the ones that have!

I don't go into a lot of my thoughts on each of these fandoms and characters, but I've requested all of them in other exchanges unless I stated otherwise below, so if you want more info on the way I look at them, just filter my posts by the "fanfic exchange letter" tag to see other letters that have the same fandoms.

I haven't requested any crossover ships (they didn't even occur to me to nominate!) or tags other than Worldweavers fusion, but with the exception of Gold Diggers, you are totally welcome to cross any of my requested fandoms with any of the others, or with the following:

1-800-Missing (S1 only, not the S2-S3 of Missing)
C-16: FBI
Cybergeddon (web series)
Push (2009)
Sue Thomas F.B.Eye
Worldweavers - Alma Alexander

And now to the requests (in the order of which I found them in the tagset):

Gold Diggers (1995) )

X-Men (Movieverse) )

Alphas (TV) )

FBI (TV 2018) )

FBI (TV 2018) )

Rookie Blue )

Rookie Blue )

Smallville )

Women's Murder Club (TV) )

Rizzoli & Isles (TV) )

Happy writing! :D

I love women who are strong, women who have quiet depth, women with an active inner life, women who think and/or feel… You'll probably see this in the characters I requested.

If a prompt requires a mention or implies sex in some way, feel free to include it as necessary as long as the focus of the fic is elsewhere.

Don't worry if someone's written a similar idea before (even as a gift for me!).

Hurt/comfort is one of my favorite things, so when I heard of this exchange, I couldn't resist trying it out. :D Below I've done a lot of describing the awesomeness about each pairing or group, and gave a few prompts in case you find them useful. I hope you have a lot of fun writing for me. :)

What I love about relationships is all the emotional depth: vulnerability, loyalty, knowing someone so well you know what they feel/think/need, even just having someone there as an emotional "rock". The whole "not being alone" feeling is such a powerful theme.

Besides those tropes, here are my general likes:
deep platonic friendship, romantic friendship, asexual romance, found families, apocalyptic fic, hurt/comfort (obviously!), nonsexual physical touch (including cuddling), self-sacrifice, characters being vulnerable, character redemption, survival fic, positive treatment of religion, characters dealing with trauma, trust building, missing scenes, canon divergence AU (especially fix-it fic)

DNWs: supernatural/fantasy beings (elves, vampires, werewolves, gnomes, zombies, etc.), AUs other than canon divergence or alt beginnings, deathfic or horror, calling an adult "baby" or "darling", mpreg, crackfic, gore (mild violence is OK, just not as graphic as a surgery documentary), uncensored profanity, first/second person fic

I have requested "bullet removal" and/or "Cleaning/treating wounds" on some fandoms; the description you'd need to do for those will not squick me, so don't worry about it running afoul of my DNW for gore. It has to be very graphic to bother me.

For instance, I've requested several tags that include rape; with these, as long as you aren't glorying in the nonconsensual aspect of things and focus on the emotional recovery or comfort afterwards, it's fine for me.

Don't worry if someone's written a similar idea before. My first real fandom was one where people used to write a dozen versions of the same TV ep, and I loved reading them all. There are never too many versions of the same story, in my opinion.

Some of the fandoms below have more freeforms than others; this has nothing to do with how much or how little I love the pairings/groups, but more with how versatile the pairing was for different tropes and situations. I'm sure I'll love reading whatever you write for any of these fandoms! :)

Below are optional prompts - or just plain squeeing and unhelpful "I'd love this!" - in the order that I found the tags in the tagset:

Alphas (TV) )

FBI (TV 2018) )

Rookie Blue )

Sue Thomas: F.B.Eye )

Women's Murder Club (TV) )

Can't wait to see what you write for me! I hope you have a blast doing so. :D
doranwen: the character Sam from Rookie Blue holding the face of character Andy (Rookie Blue)
Well, I didn't write a ton - somewhere around 3k total - but I did double the length of one of my Rookie Blue WIPs. It's the AU for after 4x01, where I play with Andy's reactions to the trauma of having a gun held to her head, and the fallout it has on her relationships and mental health. (Because the show SO glossed over that and it was absolutely ridiculous. I mean, c'mon, a single scene talking about it - while they're still running for their lives - and she's all good? Who are we kidding?)

For anyone who wasn't aware, my obsession with Rookie Blue led to me creating [community profile] rookieblue. So far I haven't gotten anyone else to post or even comment, but I remain hopeful. The fandom cannot be *entirely* dead! So if you know anyone who is into Rookie Blue, please send them that way. :)

I got kind of obsessed with Rookie Blue this summer. (Some of my online friends might well ask "Kind of?" with great skepticism, and rightfully so.) The result was that I created a spreadsheet of all the fics I downloaded and saved from AO3, Fanfiction.net, and anywhere else (LJ comms, you name it). As I did so, I made notes of my favorite fanfics, and decided to create a recs post with all 181 of them.

Disclaimer: This is NOT a master list of all the well-written fics out there. Inclusion on this list does require a minimum level of writing quality (though a few on this list push that a bit), but more importantly to me, there has to be a certain something that grabs me, whether it be the wording, the intensity of the emotion, a plot element, something. Whatever it is, it makes me want to re-read the fic, so I figured it might prove interesting to someone else.

The fics below are organized into different groups, starting with episode-focused stories.

For each group, I've selected one fic as the "if you only read one fic for this group, read this one" choice, to be marked with this icon:
Fics chosen for this are as well-written as I could find, and exemplify the group/category as best as possible. Preference on this choice was also given to complete stories, unless a WIP was exceptionally good beyond the rest.

WIPs are marked with this icon, so you can avoid if you don't like reading unfinished stories:
(Icons come from the Icon pack by Icons8.)

So without further ado, I present the recs (along with my thoughts on why I love the fics):
