In response to a user on Reddit who wanted recs for well-written fics, here are all the fics in my database which I've tagged as exceptionally well-written. Most are also tagged as favorites (i.e. I love re-reading them) and a few are not, but their lower level of re-read appeal to me has no bearing on how well-written they are, and what doesn't grab me emotionally may be the perfect fic for you. In each case I thought the author did an amazing job with words and turns of phrase, and that these fics should be seen by more people.

updated 2021-12-25

This post is my complete list of crossovers (as far as I've added them in my database). I will endeavor to keep it updated as new crossover fics are added to the database.

I have included one of my own fics in this post, and tagged it as a favorite, because I like to re-read it. (I only do this for some of my fics.) It is not marked as exceptionally well-written because I couldn't evaluate my own work with clarity that way, even if I particularly like the way I wrote something. It's also tagged as a WIP because I never did get to finishing it. *sheepish grin*

The sad part of archiving is running into groups which are effectively closed - the owner/moderator is MIA for some reason (or just not seeing the emails of me requesting membership), so there's no way to be approved as a member. Yet there are some that I really want to be a member of for their own sake, because I want to read the posts. Below are my top five:

#1 - PretenderHeadquarters: link
I love The Pretender a ton, and Jarod/Miss Parker are my OTPest of OTPs. If I had known of The Pretender back when this group was really active, I would have totally joined in a heartbeat. (I commented on their LJ to no avail; I'd have posted on the Facebook account too if I had a FB account - if anyone wants to do that for me, please! That would be very helpful.)
Approved and backing this one up now! :D

#2 - SueThomas_FBeye: link
SFTBE is one of my favorite shows, and it's already had whole forums stuffed full of fic disappear with no backups. I'd hate to see these vanish too!

#3 - deaddolphinandfloggedhorse: link
This is a truly MASSIVE archive of posts and Logan/Marie fic for X-Men movies - a ship I love very much. I would love to read the fic on here!

#4 - lordoftheringstrilogy: link
This one looks to have been reasonably active with probably some interesting fic and discussion, and I love Lord of the Rings to pieces; it's the first fandom I ever saw fic for, and the books have a special place in my heart.

#5 - FidesAchates: link
This one's a gen fic group! I don't know whether any of the fandoms posted about are mine, but I'd love to have a chance to find out.

Should you know anyone who is a member of any of them, please let them know how to back things up and let them know I would love to be able to read, even if the admin of the group isn't around to grant me access! (Even if it's just "here's the html export of the entire set of messages".)

The ones that didn't make my top 5 list )
doranwen: reading one book is like eating one potato chip (Reading One Book)
This is my first time trying Innumerable Stars! I'm looking forward to it. :D I did a lot of describing the awesomeness about each character or group, and gave a few prompts in case you find them useful. I hope you have a lot of fun writing for me. :)

I love characters who are strong, characters who have quiet depth, characters with an active inner life, characters who think and/or feel… What I love about relationships is all the emotional depth: vulnerability, loyalty, knowing someone so well you know what they feel/think/need, even just having someone there as an emotional "rock". The whole "not being alone" feeling is such a powerful theme.

Here are my general likes:
deep platonic friendship, found families, hurt/comfort, nonsexual physical touch (including cuddling), self-sacrifice, characters being vulnerable, character redemption, survival fic, characters dealing with trauma, trust building, missing scenes, canon divergence AU (especially fix-it fic)

DNWs: sex or sexual feelings, supernatural/fantasy beings not canonical to Middle-earth, AUs other than canon divergence or alt beginnings, deathfic or horror, calling an adult "baby" or "darling", mpreg, crackfic, gore (mild violence is OK, just not as graphic as a surgery documentary), uncensored profanity, first/second person fic

And now to the requests (in the order of which I found them in the tagset):

Born of Hope (2009) )

The Lord of the Rings - J. R. R. Tolkien )

Happy writing! :D

This is my first time trying Genex! I'm looking forward to it. :D I did a lot of describing the awesomeness about each friendship, and gave a few prompts in case you find them useful. I hope you have a lot of fun writing for me. :)

What I love about friendships is all the emotional depth: vulnerability, loyalty, knowing someone so well you know what they feel/think/need, even just having someone there as an emotional "rock". The whole "not being alone" feeling is such a powerful theme. I once made up a 101 favorite tropes list (in no particular order) and a lot of them are ship-oriented, so feel free to make use of those if any of them get your muse going: http://doranwen.livejournal.com/246063.html

Besides those tropes, here are my general likes:
deep platonic friendship, found families, apocalyptic fic, hurt/comfort, nonsexual physical touch (including cuddling), self-sacrifice, characters being vulnerable, character redemption, survival fic, positive treatment of religion, characters dealing with trauma, trust building, missing scenes, canon divergence AU (especially fix-it fic)

DNWs: sex or sexual feelings, supernatural/fantasy beings (elves, vampires, werewolves, gnomes, zombies, etc.), AUs other than canon divergence or alt beginnings, deathfic or horror, calling an adult "baby" or "darling", crackfic, gore (mild violence is OK, just not as graphic as a surgery documentary), uncensored profanity, first/second person fic

Don't worry if someone's written a similar idea before. My first real fandom was one where people used to write a dozen versions of the same TV ep, and I loved reading them all. There are never too many versions of the same story, in my opinion. I love to see how two people can take the same idea and come up with two totally different stories. :D

And now to the requests (in the order of which I found them in the tagset):

The Lord of the Rings - J. R. R. Tolkien )

Gold Diggers (1995) )

Tomorrow When the War Began (2010) )

X-Men (Movieverse) )

Crossover Fandoms )

Rizzoli & Isles )

Sue Thomas: F.B.Eye )

Women's Murder Club (TV) )

Happy writing! :D

AUex is here!!!!!! I wanted AUex before it ever existed, and was so delighted that the mod decided to try it this year. I adore canon divergence so much, you have no idea. (But you will by the time you get to the end of this letter!) I did a lot of describing the awesomeness about each character and AU idea, and hope you're truly inspired by them. I hope you have a lot of fun writing for me. :)

I love characters who are strong, characters who have quiet depth, characters with an active inner life, characters who think and feel… You'll probably see this in the characters I requested. :)

Besides those tropes, here are my general likes:

There are never too many versions of the same story, in my opinion. Too few of these AUs have been written, and I want to see more of even the ones that have!

This might be useful for anyone who just wants a good fic in a certain category, no matter the fandom. Everything is cut so if you don't want to see a particular category, just be sure to view this from the page for this date, and expand only the categories you want. I'll add more fics to this as I find them or think of them. This list is by no means all-inclusive; absence of a fic on it only means that fic has not come to my mind yet as an outstanding example of a particular category, though it may be well-written.

Please let me know if you run across any dead links to stories (that aren't specified - at least one of the stories in this post was deleted after I rec'd it, and I've left the rec up with a note to that effect).

For other fic lists, check out my master recs post.

doranwen: reading one book is like eating one potato chip (Reading One Book)
Over the years, as he had pondered what it was he lacked that made his father so displeased with him, Faramir had often wished for his brother's easy temper, or his uncle's charm and grace. In Éowyn, he saw a swiftness of passion so different from the deliberations of his own heart that it drew the breath from him. But, love, loyalty, patience – these were Faramir's gifts, and when he chose to give them, they were returned, and in abundance. Save once.
