Dear Innumerable Stars 2017 Writer
Aug. 13th, 2017 05:05 pmThis is my first time trying Innumerable Stars! I'm looking forward to it. :D I did a lot of describing the awesomeness about each character or group, and gave a few prompts in case you find them useful. I hope you have a lot of fun writing for me. :)
I love characters who are strong, characters who have quiet depth, characters with an active inner life, characters who think and/or feel… What I love about relationships is all the emotional depth: vulnerability, loyalty, knowing someone so well you know what they feel/think/need, even just having someone there as an emotional "rock". The whole "not being alone" feeling is such a powerful theme.
Here are my general likes:
deep platonic friendship, found families, hurt/comfort, nonsexual physical touch (including cuddling), self-sacrifice, characters being vulnerable, character redemption, survival fic, characters dealing with trauma, trust building, missing scenes, canon divergence AU (especially fix-it fic)
DNWs: sex or sexual feelings, supernatural/fantasy beings not canonical to Middle-earth, AUs other than canon divergence or alt beginnings, deathfic or horror, calling an adult "baby" or "darling", mpreg, crackfic, gore (mild violence is OK, just not as graphic as a surgery documentary), uncensored profanity, first/second person fic
And now to the requests (in the order of which I found them in the tagset):
Born of Hope (2009)
I really love how the cast and crew took a tiny budget and pulled off something this good. The film grabbed me from the get-go and I think they did a fantastic job at bringing the world to life. Elgarain was the standout to me (it wasn't until after I finished watching that I realized that the actress was the director as well!), and you'll see that every request for this fandom includes her in some way. :)
Prompts by tag:
Group: Arathorn & Elgarain (Born of Hope):
Arathorn might be clueless about Elgarain's crush on him, but he obviously considers her a good friend. I'd love to see how some of that started - maybe something of her early days as a Ranger? He does say he was the one who supported her becoming a ranger, so maybe something from that.
Group: Arathorn/Elgarain (Born of Hope):
I'd love to see the canon moment when Elgarain realizes her feelings for Arathorn. Or go AU and have them requited in some way!
Group: Elgarain & Dírhaborn (Born of Hope):
These two were too cute - I loved their banter. Would love anything from them getting into mischief as children to working as Rangers together.
Group: Elgarain/Dírhaborn (Born of Hope):
We get about two seconds of this ship requited on screen (and no time for any more), so either show me the one-sided version, or go AU with it and find a way to make these two live!
Elgarain (Born of Hope):
Oh, Elgarain. <3 Not only was Kate Madison the best actress in the whole film (and her character rivals Christopher Dane's Arathorn for best character), Elgarain was simply an awesome character by herself. A woman Ranger who is beautiful and tough, yet has a softer side. A recipe for instant love for me!
I love her character arc throughout the film, but found the ending to her story so tragic that I really don't want to see any foreshadowing or focusing on it. Instead, give me anything from child!Elgarain to Elgarain becoming a teenager, to when her father died and she demands to be trained. Or feel free to AU it so she lives! There are so many ways to play with that, and while it made for a good scene in the film, plotwise there's no reason why she couldn't have survived that battle. By my estimate she'd be somewhere around 120 years old at the time of the Ring War, so it's unlikely she'd fight in it, but you could argue that her blood was very Númenorean and if she had stayed in good shape and had no injuries, she could have possibly participated in it. So you have all kinds of options! Basically, I just want to see more of Elgarain, because she's fantastic. :D
The Lord of the Rings - J. R. R. Tolkien
While I've seen the films, I'm very much a books fan and have read the trilogy (along with the Hobbit) many times over the years, though I had a hard time getting through The Silmarillion when I was younger and I never did go back and re-read the whole thing. I do have a more-or-less decent knowledge of the history from reading a lot of very good fics from some of the best writers out there, and I've poked all through a couple of Tolkien encyclopedia/timeline sites to keep some of it straight, so if you need to make some reference to ancient history in the fic, go right ahead! If I don't know it straight off, I'll look it up, and I love the thoroughness of the world, that there are those references one can throw in. :)
Prompts by tag:
group: Aragorn & Faramir:
I love both these characters so much - the nobility, wisdom, etc. The relationship between the two of them is lovely - Aragorn as liege lord who respects and loves the younger man whose life he saves. That sort of deep nonsexual bond between men is so rare in media these days (and perhaps in real life) but it is one of my favorite things about LOTR. I would love to see moments between them before the march to the Black Gate, or glimpses of their friendship in the Fourth Age. Maybe they're discussing affairs of state - or testing skills against each other. Or maybe they're remembering those they have lost. (Boromir… *sniffs*) If you really want to go wild with this one, what if Aragorn was Faramir's biological father? Whatever you do with them, I'm sure I'll love it!
Group: Aragorn & Finduilas (LOTR books):
I'd love to see some of the interactions between Thorongil and Finduilas. Did she suspect his true identity? Was Denethor jealous of their friendship, and did that jealousy play into his disfavor of Thorongil? I'd love to see anything you come up with!
Group: Arwen & Éowyn & Lothiriel:
These three women ought to be really interesting together - we know some of Arwen and Éowyn but have no information on what Lothíriel was like, so have fun with it! I'm open to all sorts of characterization for her, and whether you have these three discussing the men in their lives, the trials of managing realms, or in action somehow, I'll love to read it.
Group: Boromir & Gilraen (LOTR books):
All right, I'll admit - I nominated and requested this one mostly because it requires major AU-ing to make it work. :D Whether you only make it so Gilraen's still living at the time of the Ring War, and Boromir meets her at Rivendell, or you find a way for Boromir to live as well and have them meet up after the Ring War, I'd be very eager to read! Boromir might have few or no female relatives left (since we're told nothing about Imrahil's wife or other sister besides Finduilas, nor about Denethor's sisters), so I like the idea of Gilraen being a sort of mother, aunt, or even grandmother figure, given her age.
Group: Imrahil & Gilraen (LOTR books):
This one's another AU - I really think Gilraen died too young. And Imrahil is closer to her son's age; I think he would have seen her as something of a mother or aunt figure, and become as good friends with her as with her son. If she had lived - which, since I requested this ship, you can make happen! :D
Happy writing! :D
