Saturday night thoughts

Tonight I actually got to working on organizing my ever-expanding folder on this computer titled "Books to shelve". In other words, everything I save from the Internet pretty much gets dumped in there (for convenience of having a single place to save to and upload from, as much as having one "incoming" place to go through). Some stuff gets moved out pretty fast (e.g. music instantly goes to its own "Recently downloaded music" folder, and pictures to the "Pictures to sort" one), but fanfiction tends to stay there till it surfaces at the top of the list. Presently the folder has 545 items in it, so anything I saved recently won't be appearing any time soon (the stuff at the top is from March, to give you an idea). But at least I cleaned up a few tonight to get it down to that much. And of course, I had to read the fanfics to know exactly where to put them (L&C fic being sorted by author makes it simple, but for Smallville fic, I have a rather extensive organization system based on the ship featured, among other things). And then I started reading fics out of a saved folder. Just because. And started thinking about them.
So, if you don't like Smallville, or have never heard of it, don't bother reading the stuff below--it'll probably be a waste of your time, and either annoy or confuse you, depending on your circumstances. If you do like it, however, and have the time to waste, and really want to, click away.
I like Lexana. I really do. I think I've liked it ever since I really thought about it as a possible ship. I liked it even more when I discovered The Talon site, and the essays and fanfic there. And I like it even more tonight, after reading at least a third of my folder of saved Lexana fics.
You see, there's something about that ship. It's not just that it frees Clark up to be with Chloe (which is my primary SV ship, and will always be). If that were true, then I'd be just as enthusiastic about Plana. And Plana isn't bad--I've read a couple good Plana fics. But there seriously aren't very many Plana fics in the first place, for one good reason: Plana is OK, but it's boring. There's not a lot you can do with it. They don't have the passion and love and tenderness that Chlark can have. But Lexana . . . ah, Lexana is another matter altogether. Lexana can be mysterious. It can be tantalizing and alluring. It beckons, lurking in corners, wavering between light and shadow. It's an entirely different substance than Chlark, but nearly as intriguing. And just as perfect as farmboy-turned-hero with soft-hearted-snarky-reporter together can be, is not-quite-so-perfect-girl with shady-and-cryptic-billionaire. Chlark might be light and warmth and cherishing, but Lexana is its shadowy counterpart. Chlark is undeniably good. With Lexana, you're never quite sure. And *that*, I think, is part of its appeal.
