Oh, totally makes sense to me. Most AUs that I like are canon divergence, which you and I already agree are fantastic (and sometimes much much better than the way canon went). The ones that transform the setting, or give the characters different occupations, etc., they can be hit and miss, depending on the fandom. For instance, I can't generally buy AUs that have Sam or Andy as anything but cops, because being a cop is such an integral part of their character that it feels OOC to put them in any other role. (See my post on rookieblue about that.) But now and then I like the sort that add a layer of interestingness - and of late, I've been curious how a Soulbond AU would affect the standard Rookie Blue story. Because I think Sam and Andy were absolutely *meant* for each other, and throwing something in there where they might have to acknowledge that sooner rather than later - well, that could make things quite interesting, lol. Plus I like the societal tweaks. There's a fascinating Soulbond AU for Rizzoli & Isles that introduced me to the idea, and they did a great job with it, using the trope that they feel each other's pain, and worked in all the canon injuries (and added ones that fit) so it still felt like R&I but had the added dimension. That's the sort of thing I would try to do, if I had the time and ideas. I'm not sure I could write it - but I'm sure going to put it as a Rookie Blue prompt in every exchange possible and hope that sometime I'll get lucky!
Heeeeee, good luck! Writing is challenging sometimes.
Have fun!!!! I wish I'd gotten the latest edits on my fic done for you before you leave - but every time I think "oh, I should write", then I realize I'm still behind on the worksheets, and I have this deadline of the end of the summer to try to get this one level done - and I'm not sure I can make it. So I'm going to get more writing/edits done here and there as I can (and possibly less than you'd like because I foolishly have signed up to one exchange and nominated for two more, but I can't help myself because it's Every Woman and AUex and Fic Corner even). I definitely am not giving up on the fic! Knowing that you're waiting for more is keeping my brain on it, and that sense of "must write!" which is absolutely vital to ever completing it, so thank you! And I hope your trip goes smoothly and you have a wonderful time!
