doranwen: Lois & Clark with text There's nothing like the comfort of a friend (Comfort)

I have a sad tale to tell all of you, but I want to share it, and I hope you'll read to the end.

In 2006, I participated in Holiday Wishes (it might have been the first time). As I read through posts, I spotted someone looking for an editor for their novel. We embarked on a back-and-forth e-mailing phase for several months, as she sent me chapters of her novel, and I read through them for spelling/grammar errors, and we discussed them as needed. When I finished editing, I wished her the best of luck with finding a publisher, and went on with my life. I had thoroughly enjoyed the story, though; it was like X-Men in some ways (interesting mutations), yet SO original and intriguing and complex with a war between a genetics company and a resistance against them, and the search for truth about the whole matter. As a result, I kept thinking about it over time and wondered what had become of it.

Tonight, I chatted with a friend online regarding it, and finally decided to go hunt it down. I searched through my e-mails to find her real name, Zellie Blake, and googled it to see whether she'd gotten the book published. . . . I found out she died of squamous cell carcinoma--a type of cancer--on September 5, 2010. Only a few months ago. :( *wishes badly that she had gotten around to looking for her earlier* She was only 27.

She struggled to find someone willing to publish the novel she ended up calling Lightning Spliced, but her friends finally got together and helped it get published on Lulu and Amazon. I am recommending it to all of you, for several reasons. Not only was she a wonderful person, she was an amazingly talented writer (I think you'll all enjoy it!), and all proceeds for the book are donated to the American Cancer Society. I think it's a fitting tribute, and want to encourage everyone to get it. I have put it on my Amazon.com wishlist and may buy it myself once I have a little more money.

Lightning Spliced on Lulu - paperback (note that buying it on Lulu will generate more for ACS than buying it on Amazon)
Lightning Spliced on Lulu - pdf download (if you're in a country that's expensive/impossible to ship to, this may be the best option--can't tell if there's DRM on it, but doesn't seem to say anything about it, so I'm guessing not)

So sad, but thanks for sharing! I've added it to my wishlist as well... which is mostly my "I want to read this" list. (Suppose I should use my Good Reads account for that...)

Such a sad story :( Poor girl! But at least her book got published and there's money being raised for a good cause thanks to her.
