Top AO3 fics by stats
May. 3rd, 2021 09:50 pmApparently this has been going around as a meme, and it actually interests me, so I finally got around to doing it.

8. Questions (The Giver Series - Lois Lowry, rated G, 1060 words)
9. Moments in Another Life (X-Men (Original Timeline Movies)) (300 words)
10. To Serve the King (The Lord of the Rings - J. R. R. Tolkien) (727 words)
Totally not surprising, given the relative popularity of these fandoms, and the number of years those particular fics have been around (the most recent one is at *least* two years old, if I'm not mistaken).
Considering that I write in tiny fandoms as well as large ones, neither hits nor kudos are that interesting of stats by themselves. Far more interesting is the *ratio* of kudos to hits, as I think that has a better handle on whether the story is good or not.
Unfortunately, AO3 doesn't provide an easy way to get at this information (at least, not that I know of! a csv download of all current stats would be nice, but doesn't exist at this time). So I had to do some copy/paste and spreadsheet work, but I came up with THAT list, which is remarkably different from the ones above. I've excluded any which had fewer than 20 hits in all, because the low numbers of hits skews the ratio too wildly for my liking.
Top Ten Fics by Kudos/Hits Ratio
1. Of Fortunes and Friendship (Leverage, rated G, 654 words)
2. Five Criminal Things Maggie Learned to Do (And One She Didn't) (Leverage, rated G, 2647 words)
3. at the intersection of then and now (Chronicles of Narnia - C. S. Lewis, Not Rated, 1992 words)
4. Dawn of Fealty (The Lord of the Rings - J. R. R. Tolkien, rated G, 555 words)
5. all that's left of soldier dreams (Earth Girl Trilogy - Janet Edwards, rated G, 1118 words)
6. i should know who i am by now (Leverage, rated T, 737 words)
7. won't you carefully rest (Leverage, rated G, 2725 words)
8. Colonization (Languages (Anthropomorphic), rated G, 100 words)
9. First Meeting (Tortall - Tamora Pierce, rated G, 578 words)
10. An Unexpected Adventure (The Lord of the Rings - J. R. R. Tolkien, rated G, 600 words)
Now there's a drastic change! Only one fic from the previous lists appears on this one. The high number of Leverage fics on it owes itself to a couple factors: high levels of recent fandom activity while not being a megafandom (therefore a lot of people reading fics in recent months and not missing mine due to tons of other fics being posted), and the fact that a lot of the Leverage fics were written for exchanges where people asked for broadly appealing things (and were very happy with the resulting gifts).
I also find it interesting that while most of the fics on this last list are ones I thought were some of my best, a couple are ones I wouldn't consider my best fics. They're not bad, mind you! Just… not my top writing, in my opinion. But only one of those has fewer than 100 hits, so who knows. Maybe they're better than I thought they were. :)
